Portugal has once again led the winners at the World Golf Awards Gala Ceremony 2016, taking the title of World’s Best Golf Destination for the third year in succession.
The announcement was made during the World Golf Awards Gala Ceremony, which was held on Saturday evening at the Conrad Algarve for the third year running.
The results were unveiled after hundreds of thousands of ballots were cast, with Portugal unsurprisingly also being elected Europe’s Best Golf Destination. Quinta do Lago meanwhile took the title of Europe’s Best Golf Venue.
On a domestic level, the Oceânico Faldo was voted Portugal’s Best Golf Course, while the famous Penha Longa Resort in Sintra was voted the country’s Best Golf Hotel.
Golf tour operators were also listed in the awards, with PAGS (Portugal Algarve Golf Services) elected Portugal’s Best Inbound Golf Tour Operator, while InGolf was voted the Best Outbound Golf Operator.
Sir Nick Faldo was meanwhile revealed as the Golf Course Designer of the Year.
Also celebrating was England’s The Belfry, recognised as Europe’s Best Golf Hotel.
World Golf Awards Managing Director Christopher Frost said: “The third instalment of the World Golf Awards has been the most successful to date, welcoming industry leaders to the Algarve for a weekend of golf, networking opportunities and our fabulous Gala Ceremony.
“It has been an honour to recognise so many world-class organisations here this evening and I offer my sincere congratulations to all our winners.”
St Andrews Links - Old Course was also among the winners, successfully defending the titles of Europe’s Best Golf Course and World’s Best Golf Course which it won in 2015.
A duo of unique awards were also presented at the event, with Richard Tessel, chief executive of easyGolf Worldwide Australia, taking the title of World Golf Awards Travel Personality of the Year 2016.
At the same time golf trainer David Leadbetter was recognised with the World Golf Awards Lifetime Achievement Award 2016.
Event partner Quinta do Lago again offered World Golf Awards guests a chance to enjoy its three award-winning championship golf courses – the South Course, Laranjal and the North Course, which was co-designed by Beau Welling and European Ryder Cup-winning captain Paul McGinley.
The annual World Golf Awards serve to celebrate and reward excellence in golf tourism, world class courses and golf destinations.
Golf tourism constitutes a vital segment in the global travel and tourism marketplace. An estimated 60 million golfer visits will take place in 2016 to the 32,000 golf courses and resorts worldwide.

The voting works on a first-past-the-post system to ensure impartiality and independence. Votes are submitted online via the World Golf Awards website.
